Thomas Tallis, together with William Byrd, produced music of exemplary quality in England throughout the 16th century. We will sing mostly polyphonic pieces in four voice parts using modern open source editions.
Director Lee T. Lovallo has extensive experience in early music, dating to his founding Principia Musica, the Medieval-Renaissance ensemble at California State University, Bakersfield in 1978. He established the annual series of Evensong performances in Sacramento 1982-1987 for which he edited and directed music of Orlando Gibbons. Since 2006 Dr. Lovallo has directed Renaissance Choir Sacramento for which he edited and led performances of Ockeghem’s Missa cuiusvis toni and directed a wide range of 15th and 16th century choral works. He is active as an organ builder, specializing in historical style tracker pipe organs and serves as organist and as music director at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Antelope. Following graduate work in music at SUNY Buffalo where he earned a Ph.D. in music, Dr. Lovallo taught choir and music history in high schools and colleges in Northern California, recently took part in the Tallis Scholars Summer Course, the Musica Antica a Magnano seminar, and the San Francisco Early Music Society Medieval/Renaissance summer program.
