Works of Tudor and Elizabethan English composers will be heard in the context of Anglican Evensong on the second Sunday of each month beginning on September 8 at 4:00 pm at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 7850 Watt Ave., Antelope, CA. This intimate chapel features a small chamber organ in meantone temperament and lovely acoustics.
Repertoire includes the office hymn “Christe, qui lux es et dies” by Robert White (c. 1538-1574), canticles by Thomas Morley (1557-1602), and music by Thomas Tallis (1505-1585), his Preces and Responses as well as the anthems “If ye love me”, “Audivi vocem”, “Out from the deep”, “Sancte Deus” and “In pace in idipsum”.
Evensong is a conflation of two early monastic hours–vespers and compline–and consists of music and prayers. There is no homily and no Eucharist in this peaceful, ordered close to the day. A free will offering is accepted for this service which lasts approximately 30 minutes. For more information: 916-320-8423, ltlovallo@gmail.com
